Cypress, Middle Bear, and Chihuahua Pine Picnic Areas
These three developed picnic areas are clustered in Bear Canyon. This is the first point along the byway that visitors find themselves among tall conifers. Mexican Spotted Owl and Arizona Cypress are two species that might be seen here. The areas offer picnicking in a cool forested setting and are enjoyed by Tucsonans during the summer. As at most other developed recreation sites along the byway, visitors will find basic forest information and rules and regulations here.

Rose Canyon Lake and Campground
Rose Canyon Campground, among the pines at 7,200 ft., is the largest campground along the Byway. Adjacent to the end of the campground is a fishing lake that provides visitors with angling opportunities, an uncommon activity in Southern Arizona. A perimeter trail encircles the lake. Interpretive campfire programs in the summertime entertain and inform visitors.
