Silverton is a living mining town tucked in a high mountain valley. Silverton was initially known as Baker's Park, but was named for "silver by the ton." This National Historic Landmark features quaint shops at the end of the line for the famous narrow-gauge railroad which originates in Durango. This railroad made it possible for easier transportation and established Silverton as a boom town. There are many recreational activities that you can enjoy, such as fishing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, panning for gold, and cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. Local events such as Hardrockers' Holiday and the Brass Band Festival add local flavor to the town. Victorian lodging or local campgrounds are available.
